Radon Awareness in Dane County: What Homeowners Should Know

According to Public Health Madison & Dane County, elevated radon levels have been found in about half of the homes tested in Dane County over the past five years. Because radon is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, many homeowners may not realize it’s present unless they test for it.
What Is Radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It can enter homes through foundation cracks, sump pits, crawl spaces, and other openings. Any home, new or old, well-sealed or drafty, can have elevated radon levels.
Why Radon Matters
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, contributing to approximately 21,000 deaths each year in the U.S. The risk increases even more for individuals who smoke.
Because radon cannot be detected by human senses, testing is the only way to know whether levels in your home are elevated.
January Is National Radon Action Month
Each January, public health agencies encourage homeowners to test for radon as part of National Radon Action Month. Winter is actually one of the best times to test, as homes are typically closed up, which can allow radon levels to build.
Residents in Dane, Rock, and Green counties are especially encouraged to test, given the prevalence of elevated readings in the area.

Tests are easy to complete at home
Results typically come back within two to three weeks
Local residents can also obtain test kits by contacting the South-Central Radon Information Center or picking one up at participating locations throughout Madison.
